God Bless America… Please.

You may want to read this latest post on Barack Obama’s site first.

In the late 1950s, John F. Kennedy and his camp had to face a sobering thought: Would (could?) America elect a Roman Catholic president?

In 2008, some fifty years on, America is still mindful of issues of religion. But throw race and gender into the mix too.

Hillary Clinton is female.

Barack Obama is African-American.

No one seems to care anymore if either candidate is Catholic.

Chalk one up for progress.

One down, two to go.

America tries desperately to put issues of race and gender aside, but it can’t seem to help making mountains out of molehills. Americans are so over the top with their potentially offensive and defensive, politically and religiously correct remarks, that it’s no longer a race for presidential office, but a race to see who can make it to the election finish-line with as few bad-press bruises and mud-slung-splotches as humanly possible.

Let’s just hope that when any of these candidates reach office (McCain included) they remember the actual issues that caused them to run for the presidency at the beginning of this frenzied contest.

O Canada. Our True North strong and free…
