British treats in Niagara-on-the-Lake

lucozade0jd.jpgWe took a drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake yesterday and stopped in at the British/Irish/Scots shops where we bought Robertson’s Bramble Jelly for Bill and Margaret - Bill’s favourite. And while we were there I scooped up Bournvita, treacle pudding, crisps (with the packet of salt), and a bottle of Lucozade. 3427489.jpg

For those who’ve never had Lucozade it’s a bright orange glucose drink that we had as children in Britain if we were ill. Back then it came in a tall glass bottle wrapped in a sheet of cellophane (like the picture to the left) though now it’s marketed as a more modern energy drink in a flashy plastic bottle that looks like any other one on the shelf. I had a glass this afternoon, but it seemed milder than what I remember.

Lucozade always had a distinct taste - they must have changed the recipe somewhere along the way.

bournvita-775387.jpgI haven’t had Bournvita in years, though Ovaltine is always a staple in our house, and Horlicks makes its infrequent appearance once in a while.

The treacle pudding is from Heinz, and will never match my mother’s treacle pudding and custard, but I’ll give it a try. Another excuse to have custard for dessert…

I would love to be able to find (locally) the Ling’s Turkish Delight, the real stuff in the round wooden box, not the fake (horrid) candied-gelatin that’s so prevalent now. Rose and lemon turkish delight. Mmmm. There’s a sweet shop in Sidney-By-The-Sea just outside Victoria, too, that sells a decent version.
